The Livestock Data 4 Decisions (LD4D) network aims to improve the quality, quantity, accessibility and use of data by decision makers. When pondering how to apply this to gender, my initial questions are:

  • Who are the decisions makers in gender and livestock?
  • What decisions are they making?
  • What data do they need to make these decisions better?

On initial reflection, I think there are going to be many answers to all of these questions - so then the next question is, how do we prioritise? If we were to pick one particular problem to solve, as a working group, what could we do?

Let me know your thoughts!

Regarding decision-making, there are many questions to ask!

For example, how does taking a decision translate into a benefit, e.g. if women take a decision to feed a dairy cow improved fodder, can she then decide how to spend income from selling the improved milk yield?

Does work to expand women's empowerment on decision-making in livestock (say to a particular species) ripple out to enable women to participate in other forms of intra-household decision-making, say with respect to how land is used? Let us imagine that a woman is empowered, through the empowerment work of her organisation, to buy an improved breed of dairy cow. Does this mean she can negotiate with her spouse to ensure sufficient land is set aside for fodder?

Hi Cathy, Thanks for your comments. These are really interesting questions and central to the use of "decision making" as a proxy for empowerment. Alessandra Galie Do you have any comments about this or resources we could read?
